How to Choose an Online Quran Teacher — 7 Questions to Ask First

Back to Blog

Finding the right online Quran teacher is one of the most important decisions for your child's Islamic education — or your own. With hundreds of options online, how do you separate a genuinely qualified teacher from someone who is simply available? After years of teaching students from the UK, USA, Australia and UAE, here are the 7 questions we recommend every family asks before booking a single class.

1. Are They Qualified? What Certifications Should You Look For?

A genuine Quran teacher should hold at minimum:

  • Ijazah — The traditional Islamic certification that proves the teacher has learned the Quran from a qualified chain of teachers going back to the Prophet ﷺ. An Ijazah in recitation (riwayah) is the gold standard.
  • Hifz completion — A teacher who has memorised the Quran themselves has a deeper relationship with the text.
  • Tajweed training — Formal study of Tajweed rules, not just informal learning.

What to ask:“Do you hold an Ijazah? Can you tell me about your Quranic education?”

At Hidayah Quran, our teacher is a qualified Hafiza with formal Tajweed training from a recognised institution in Pakistan.

2. Do They Have Experience Teaching Children (or Adults)?

Teaching children is a completely different skill from teaching adults. A teacher who excels with adults may struggle to hold a 5-year-old's attention — and vice versa. For children: ask specifically about experience with your child's age group. For adults: ask if they have experience with adult beginners who may feel self-conscious.

What to ask:“How many years have you been teaching? What age groups do you specialise in?”

3. Do They Offer a Free Trial Class?

Any confident, qualified teacher will offer a free trial. It protects you as a student and allows both sides to assess whether the fit is right. Be wary of teachers who insist on payment before you have experienced a single class.

A good free trial should last at least 20–30 minutes, allow the teacher to assess your current level, give you a clear sense of the teacher's personality and patience, and come with no obligation to continue.

Hidayah Quran offers a free 30-minute trial class with no payment and no commitment required.

4. Is the Teacher Male or Female?

For many Muslim families — especially those enrolling daughters or sisters — the gender of the teacher is a critical consideration. Islamic etiquette and personal comfort both point toward a female teacher for female students. If a female teacher is important to you, confirm this explicitly before booking. Some academies advertise “female teachers available” but assign students to male teachers by default.

At Hidayah Quran, our lead teacher is female. All 1-on-1 classes are conducted by her personally.

5. Which Platform Do They Use — and Is It Convenient for You?

Online Quran classes are typically delivered via Zoom (best audio quality, ideal for Tajweed), WhatsApp (simplest setup, no new app needed), Google Meet (good for families already using Google), or Skype (less common now). Make sure the platform the teacher uses is one you are comfortable with. A teacher who only uses one rigid platform may not suit your family's needs.

Hidayah Quran teaches via Zoom, WhatsApp AND Google Meet — you choose whichever works best for you.

6. What Are the Class Times — and Do They Fit Your Timezone?

Many Quran teachers have limited availability during Western evening hours — which is when most UK, USA and Australian students are free. Ask specifically: “Are you available in the evenings, UK time?” (or EST, AEST etc.) “Do you teach on weekends?” “How much notice do you need to reschedule a class?”

Hidayah Quran offers evening and weekend availability for UK (GMT), USA (EST–PST), Australia (AEST) and UAE (GST) students.

7. What Does the First Month Look Like?

A good teacher will give you a clear picture of what the first 4–8 weeks of classes will look like before you commit. This includes the starting point (Noorani Qaida, direct Quran, Tajweed review), how progress is tracked, how many sessions per week they recommend, and when and how you will receive feedback. Vague answers here suggest an unstructured teacher.

The Honest Checklist

Before booking any online Quran teacher, confirm:

  • They hold an Ijazah or equivalent qualification
  • They offer a free trial class
  • They are available in your timezone at convenient times
  • They teach on the platform you prefer
  • They have clear experience with your age group
  • They are the right gender for your family's preference
  • They give you a clear picture of the first month
