Noorani Qaida or Start the Quran Directly? The Answer Every Parent Needs

Back to Blog

One of the most common questions parents ask when enrolling their children in Quran classes is: “Should my child start with the Noorani Qaida, or can they just begin reading the Quran straight away?” After years of teaching students of all ages, our teacher has a clear answer — and understanding it will set your child up for long-term success.

What is Noorani Qaida?

The Noorani Qaida is a beginner's Arabic reading primer used by millions of Muslim families worldwide. It teaches the Arabic alphabet, vowels (harakat), and basic letter combinations in a structured, step-by-step way. It is the foundation upon which all Quran reading is built.

What Happens If You Skip Noorani Qaida?

Many children — and adults — have been taught the Quran by jumping straight in, learning to recite Surahs by repeating after the teacher (known as ‘parrot learning’ or tilawat without understanding). The result? The student can recite memorised Surahs but cannot read a new page of the Quran independently. They do not know their Arabic letters. Their Tajweed is built on guesswork. And the errors they developed early become extremely difficult to correct later.

The Noorani Qaida Approach — Building on a Rock

The Noorani Qaida approach ensures that from day one, the student:

  • Knows every Arabic letter individually and in its connected forms
  • Understands how vowels change the sound of letters
  • Can decode any Arabic word they encounter — not just memorised phrases
  • Has pronunciation habits built from the correct Makhraj (point of articulation)

When this student later reads the Quran, they are reading — truly reading — not reciting from memory.

So Who Should Start with Noorani Qaida?

Everyone who is a beginner — whether child or adult. The Noorani Qaida is not ‘just for kids.’ Adults who have never formally learnt Arabic letters will benefit enormously from even a short Noorani Qaida course before opening the Quran.

Who Can Skip Noorani Qaida?

Students who already know all Arabic letters and their harakat forms thoroughly — and whose Arabic reading is already reasonably accurate — can begin the Quran directly and focus on Tajweed refinement.

The Bottom Line

Spending 3–6 months on the Noorani Qaida is one of the best investments you can make in your child's Quran education. It is not a delay — it is a foundation. And a strong foundation is everything.
